While observing people’s behavior in cities, I noticed that in many cities in japan, the distance between individuals is growing, and there are few spaces where people can feel warmth and relaxation. I focused on the concept of “”BETWEEN””—the transitional space that lies between private and public areas. To create a warm and inviting environment where people moving between these spaces can naturally connect, I designed an outdoor stool that anyone can use, intended for installation in these “”BETWEEN”” zones.
Since installing traditional public benches is often restrictive and costly, I recognized the need for flexible, adaptable furniture that could be freely placed throughout the city. To achieve this, I repurposed existing street furniture (e.g. traffic cones) and melted polyethylene resin to create a new type of stool with a unique character. By introducing furniture that is accessible to everyone, my goal is to add individuality to the urban landscape, blur the boundaries between private and public spaces, and foster richer, more meaningful interactions among people.
